SHIPPING YOUR CAR INTO BUENOS AIRES

Importing a car into Argentina can be a problem without the services of a reliable Customs and Handling Agent. TWE has appointed Carlos Avila of Logistica Avro SA as Agent and Consignee to handle all incoming cars for the event.

He provides this service for the works teams in the Argentina round of the World Rally Championship. His advice and instructions are as follows:

“It is important to know that all goods go in as Temporary Imports and must be exported from Argentina. All cars must go in on an FIA Carnet but the Carnet does not cover spare parts. All spare parts and other materials must be shown on a fully detailed Proforma Invoice and be shown on a Packing List.”

  1. Instruct the Agent shipping your car to Buenos Aires that it must be consigned and addressed as follows:

    TO: (Consignee): {Your name, or the name on the Carnet de Passage}
    Logistica Avro S.A.
    Attention of: Eng. Carlos Avila
    Montevideo 735 – 4th Piso
    1019-Buenos Aires – Argentina
    Tel: +54 11 4812 6974
    Fax + 54 11 4814 2681
    avila@interlink.com.ar

  2. You or your shipping agent must then send the following documents by Courier Service (DHL, Fedex or UPS) to Carlos Avila at the above address:
      • You must use an FIA Carnet de Passage. Do not use an ATA Carnet, they are not valid in Argentina.
      • Send the Original Direct Bill of Lading. Do not send the House Bill of Lading, it creates extra costs and delays Customs clearance.
  3. There may be certain costs involved to create documents and guarantees for the temporary import of spare parts and other equipment. Items not re-exported will be subject to import duties and taxes plus 10% as administrative charges.

  4. See the 3 forms provided by Logistica Avro enclosed with this Guidance Note. Once you have completed the form and sent them to Logistica they will make contact with your shipping agent to ensure correct procedures are followed.

  5. Standard time for Customs clearance is two days after the arrival of the boat. The owner does not need to be present for this clearance. But to do this Logistica Avro must have the couriered package of your documents in their possession ten days before the boat arrives.

  6. Containers will have 5 days free storage on arrival. If Customs procedures cannot be completed within this time additional charges will be made. Logistica Avro unload the cars from the containers, return the containers and then store the cars and other cargo in a secure compound which is about 15 minutes drive from the city centre.

  7. On arrival in Buenos Aires phone Logistica Avro office (11 4812 6974) and ask for Carlos, Turby or Veronica. They will provide a cab or mini bus to take you from your hotel to the compound, which is 600 metres from the Sheraton Hotel.

The address of the compound is the Edificio Centinela building, Av. Antartida Argentina 1480, Buenos Aires.

  8. To assist Logistica with their planning you can email Carlos and tell him the date of your arrival and tell him which day you would like to collect your car. avila@interlink.com.ar

  9. You will need the following documents to drive in Argentina:
      • Valid Drivers licence
      • Copy of the Vehicle registration document - title of ownership
      • Certified copy of authorisation to drive the car if it is not owned by you
      • Original 3rd party Insurance Policy.
      • Copy of the Port Release Order (Supplied by Logistica Avro)
  10. Schedule of charges and costs to be paid to Logistica Avro SA

These costs include all port and handling charges, Customs Broker’s fee, transportation of the container from docks to secure compound, unloading container and returning it to docks, crane and forklift charges and up to ten days parking in the compound and a cab or mini bus from your hotel to the compound.

    1 car in 20 ft container US$ 1,475.60
    2 cars in 40ft container US$ 2,107.20

These charges are based on the exchange rate at 1 US$ = 2.91 Pesos. Should the rate change by +/- 3% an adjustment will be made.

Payment can be made as follows:
      • In cash in US$ when collecting the car
      • By credit card - only Visa or MasterCard - a 5% surcharge is added to these credit card payments
      • By bank transfer at the time of sending the documents. (E-mail Carlos to obtain details of his bank)

Cars cannot be released unless full payment is received.

Advice: TWE suggests that you print an additional copy of this Guidance Note and give it to the company that is shipping your car to Buenos Aires.
