We suggest you read all sections which will give you a better idea of what everyone needs to do.
THE RALLY
Both the Modern Saloon Car and Classic categories need to comply with our Technical Regulations which are printed in the Event Regulations.
These basically fall into two types - items that you MUST do or have and items that you can have if you want them. Obviously, it is the former that are vitally important although the latter may give you a better chance of reaching the finish.
IMPORTANT: where something is described as FIA homologated this is exactly what it says - items approved by other bodies, whether considered superior or not, will not be accepted.
Remember that this is a long distance event so prepare your car accordingly - breaking down on the first stage is not a good idea!
Modern Saloon Cars
Cars in this category must be prepared to the technical regulations laid down by the FIA for Group N (you can download these from the FIA website at www.fia.com/sport/Regulations/appjregs.html - Article 254 and see also 253). Unlike normal FIA requirements, the car does not have to be homologated but should be less that five years old although older models will be accepted at the organiser’s discretion.
You must fit FIA homologated competition seats, 6-point seat belts, plumbed-in fire extinguisher and roll cage. You need an ignition and battery cut-out switch, fireproof bulkheads front and back of the passenger compartment, handheld fire extinguisher, Terratrip or similar, a warning triangle, and tow rope.
If you change the original fuel tank it must be to an FIA homologated FT3 tank, which we recommend you have anyway.
We also recommend a sump guard, competition shock absorbers, brake pads and, of course, rally tyres. Tool kit, spare fuel can, water carrier, spare bulbs and fan belt are all pretty essential.
What you MAY do to a Group N car is restricted to the FIA regulations.
Classics
You need to do all that the Group N category has to do and the FT3 tank is obligatory due to the age of the vehicles.
You are allowed to do more to the vehicle than allowed by Group N and these are described in the Technical Addendum to the Event Regulations.
THE CHALLENGE
This depends on your vehicle but all types and ages should have had a full service and a comprehensive check-over before you leave.
If you are using a 4wd SUV it is pretty well ready to go as it stands. With any other car, make sure you’ve got about 7 inches of ground clearance and decent heavy duty tyres. You must also have a First Aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, spare fuel can, water carrier, extra spare wheel & tyre, tool kit, spare bulbs and fan belt and a tow rope.
We recommend that you fit sump and fuel tank guards and make sure that the fuel and brake lines are protected. You may wish to consider installing an uprated suspension kit.
An accurate digital odometer measuring distance to 100th of a kilometre is required to make following our route instructions easy. We recommend a Terrartrip 303 although other manufacturers like Brent Communications provide similar equipment:
